Toronto Police Services test BMW for active duty

After seeing the BMW R1200RT, Deputy Chief of the Toronto police Tony Warr initiated testing of the motorcycles for active duty.

“We always have to take a look at what equipment we’re using,” Warr says, of the evaluation, comparing the BMWs to the Harley Davidson Electra Glide police specials currently used by traffic officers.

Motorcycles are used for a variety of duties, including traffic enforcement, police escorts and even to entertain the public through the Winged Wheels program.

The motorcycles will be being evaluated on:

– Acceleration
– Heat radiation
– Sound emission
– Officer safety
– Ergonomics
– Serviceability
– Cost
– Risk management
